The new version of the TomTom firmware which was announced last March has been available for a while with the new TomTom GO x10 series. But starting today, it's also available for the owners of a GO Classic, GO 300, GO 500, GO 700, TomTom ONE and TomTom RIDER.

Version 6.12 is available immediately as a free download. But to be able to install it, you will have to use TomTom's new desktop application HOME.

New and expanded
Version 6 has lots of new features, and also existing features were expanded and/or improved. A lot of those additions and improvements were made in the PLUS software department. So this means that you will need a GO which is Bluetooth compatible, a GPRS compatible mobile phone and the newest TeleAtlast maps in order to be able to make use of some of the new features. Unfortunately, this immediately rules out the GO Classic, since this device has no Bluetooth chip. Version 6.11 will still run on the unit, but not all new features will be available to the user.

For an overview of all new features and a table with the requirements, we refer to our software special 'TomTom 6 & HOME: Innovations galore'.

Installation
The new software will be available ONLY via the HOME desktop application. Users of HOME (downloadable HERE) only need to connect their PND to their computer, after which the program will check for content updates. The new software (called 'TomTom application for GO, ONE and RIDER') may then be downloaded and will be installed automatically onto the connected device.

Version 6.12 is not meant for the new TomTom GO x10 series. The software will work on those devices as well, but it's 100% identical to the 6.11 version that became available last week, so there's not much point to installing it.

If you want to share your experiences, or if you've got questions about the new TomTom 6 application, you can always post about it on our forum, more in particular into TomTom's Firmware section.

The install on my classic was painless.

However, the new interface is awful. Whoever came up with the idea of gradient buttons should be shot. A small gradient at the edge to give a 3D look maybe, but not the entire button and background.

For all those people looking for the postcode button, its moved to a the sub-menu Address...

My 700 has frozen and will not switch off. What a bind.
Anyone know how to revert? The new HOME software will not now recognise the TOM TOM when plugged in!

works like a dream. love being able to use my tomtom via the home interface. even in the office without a satellite fix i can check traffic conditions & choose my best route home & not have to do it in the car when i've already set off. the download of v6 & the home update worked fine.

the pin option via home is a nice secure touch. now all i need is a sticker to put on the dock to warn potential theives that my go is pin protected.

The blank screen issue with my rider too. Everything works fine with 5.420 backup, but everytime I upgrade, I got the Black screen after boot.
