TomTom offers GO x10 series update

June 15, 2006 - 14:20 h¦32 replies
TomTom has released an intermediate update for the owners of a GO 510, 710 or 910. Version 6.11 can only be downloaded through TomTom HOME.

The new update does not offer big changes or enhancements in functionality as apposed to version 6.0 which is shipped standard with the new TomTom GO's.

Fixes
Every owner of a TomTom of the new series is advised to install this new 6.11 version though, since it fixes a few bugs. To name a few of those bugs: eg. the problem that exists with the remote control in combination with the Traffic service, as well as the greyed-out microphone preferences icon which is now replaced with 'Bluetooth Preferences', since the microphone preferences was an obsolete icon on the new GO range anyway.

One important difference with the former firmware is that GO x10's now, when powered by the power chord in the car, will no longer switch themselves off when the power is disconnected. Most people liked this function, but it turned out to be rather a problem it you were unlucky enough to have a car mount which didn't connect good enough to the unit. The GO then constantly switched itself off, which was very annoying to the user. For this reason, TomTom has opted to (temporarily?) disable this function.

Via HOME
Version 6.11 is currently only available through TomTom's HOME desktop application. When a GO x10 unit is connected to the computer, and HOME is started, the new version of the software can automatically be downloaded and installed.

At this moment it is still unclear as to when firmware 6 will become available to the owners of a Classic, 300, 500, 700, ONE and RIDER. We do expect it any time now though, so keep a close eye on this site...

This is really gonna annoy those with the older TT GO's yahoo.gif

Love it! (Dont worry guys Im sure v6 is on it's way)

On a serious note though....

looks like the connectivity issues have been taken care of and also the mic icon being greyed out

I wouldn't call this a fix, it simply allows the x10 to continue to run on it's battery after the unit disconnects (as opposed to shuting the unit down when power is removed from the unit's car mount).

I personally like the "shut down" feature and am hesitant to download the new firmware because I know tha I will loose it. I wish that Tomtom made this an option.

Yes I agree I wont download the update as I like the unit to turn itself off when you turn the engine off.

In version 6.1 it would still shut down if it detected that a charge was not present but only if it had a solid connection with all of the pins. If it lost the charge because it was not solidly connected it would remain on. It appears that they did indeed disable the ability to power down when it loses the charge even when solidly seated in the car charger in version 6.11. Fortunately my new car mount no longer loses the connection so I won't need to make use of this "fix".

I am disappointed by the decision to disable the auto shutdown. I will not be downloading this update. Next time, atleast make it an option to enable or disable. I would love to see a poll on this. I think TT would be surprised how big they screwed up.

I find this mildly disturbing as I have a 910 which does not work correctly ie the power drops out from time to time. Bart do you know with any certainty whether these faulty brackets will be replaced by TomTom or do you think this update is an escape route? unsure.gif

Yes, TomTom is replacing faulty mounts and yes they do fix the problems. All you have to do is call them and they'll send you a new mount.

As said by uocooper, you can indeed contact TomTom, and they will replace your mount.
I do think that the update is a temporary solution until they find a more final fix for the problem though. Perhaps they are already running low on replacement mounts, and this fix is intended to keep everybody going until they receive a new shipment of adjusted mounts. I know that adjusting hardware, producing a new run, and shipping them over to TT can take weeks, if not months. (this is just guesswork on my part though, and in no way an official statement by TT)

Why do all the icons and pictures in this article say 6.1, when it's actually a release of 6.11? It's not like it's 6.1.1. It's 10 revisions out of date. I guess the picture making guy doesn't understand how version numbers work smile.gif

I have installed the 'update' in the hope it will address the terrible delay in getting GPS fixes ... currently I am looking a 1.5-5 minutes

Looks like they are trying to find a cheaper solution to the mount issues. I wish they would fix the root cause rather than a work around.

I bought mine with version 6.1, but I cannot update to 6.11. When I "check for updates" on the 910, it tells me that there are updates available and that I need to connect my device and update from TomTom Home. When I try to update from TomTom Home, it tells me that there are no updates. Weird...
