TomTom: firmware update 6.12 offline

July 3, 2006 - 21:27 h (update)¦254 replies
After only a few hours online, TomTom has pulled firmware update 6.12 from their site. This after several complaints from users.

The new 6.12 version of the TomTom software for the GO Classic, 300, 500, 700, TomTom ONE and RIDER, which became available for download at about half past two this afternoon, has been pulled again by TomTom. This was done because users had complained that their device was refusing to boot after installing the new firmware.

A spokesman of the company told us: "We take our customers very serious. When the problems with 6.12 became apparant this afternoon, we reacted immediately and pulled the update offline".

Second time
It's not the first time that TomTom has to retract an update very quickly after releasing it. In November 2005, the same thing happened with the 5.42 update. Back then, the problem was fixed and the update was put back online very quickly. How things will evolve now is still unknown. Or, as the TomTom spokesman told us, "We're investigating the problem right now, and we hope the be able to put the update back online very soon".

We'll keep you informed...

Dammit, i'm going on a long drive Wednesday (3hrs, Ramsgate to Wiltshire), and when i saw the email about this i rushed to download HOME and install it. But as i was doing so i saw it had been pulled.

At least i have a working TomTom (with Favorites) for the trip. Here's hoping the re-release a fixed version tomorrow. The new features look great.

I'm off to Tenerife tomorrow and was all set until I heard about this alleged 'upgrade'.

I'll wait until the upgrade has been 'trialled' first now, I think... wink.gif

I updated my ttg 500 earlier today and have to say the update was flawless, my Samsung D600 now connects for hands free calling and the navigate to Lat/Long is perfect for my hobby of hill wallking (no, I don't drive to the top of the hills but the start point of most walks is nearly always a car park in the middle of the back of beyond!)
One gripe, however, my PGPS camera warning voices no longer work - if I replace the data.chk in the ttg root with the camera voices data.chk (Liz) my ttg won't boot, so I'm back to the ridiculous boings, bells, beeps and animal noises!
I didn't like the page menu layout so I put my own tomtom.mnu in the SdkRegistry.

Maybe 6.13? will fix the data.chk

That's probably because the voices data.chk file (from Ray's site) is specifically for 5.420, we will need to wait for Ray's site to get an updated one (which will require the V6 SDK perhaps??) rather than see a firmware fix.

I take back my gripe about the Pocket GPS speed camera voices.
If any body is interested in swapping the cows and cuckoos, etc. for real voice warnings try,

Pocket GPS World Customised POI

For TT's v6.12 software, download the v6.11 on the link [7020] - I had the original 5.450, that's why 6.12 didn't like it.

ps:
Just read your post Mossman (as I was previewing this one), you're quite correct, wrong version!!

The new firmware installed just fine on my Classic. I'm not sure what the problems were, but if you want to play with the software, you can find it here:

Read the 'Read Me' file. It suggests how you might install it (impossible for me to test). Hope it works!

46jimbo's post worked for me, I just had to edit the path in the .toc file to point to my directory.

I like the ability to control my Tomtom from the computer, although I have no idea why...

Nigel,

as per what sbessel said, you need to edit your .toc file in notepad and correct the address, either that or extract it EXACTLY where it tells you to in the readme. Once you have done that it should appear in the middle section with all of your 'downloads' then, You just click on it then click 'install' and it should work.

Rough description i know, but hey... the firmware works 100% for me. very happy.
