TomTom modifies GO x10 car mount

Since the introduction of the GO x10 series, many problems have been reported with the car mount. TomTom is now shipping a modified version.

Immediately after the release of the GO 510, 710 and 910, a lot of problems were reported with the car mount. Until now TomTom didn't seem to have a solution to this serious problem. But there is hope, because last week, one of our users was sent a clearly modified mount to replace his defective one. Of course, this made us very curious and we took a closer look...

Three different problems
If we look at all the mount problems that got reported, we can differentiate them into three separate groups:

1. The connecting of the GO to and removing it from it's holder is hard and takes a lot of tinkering;
2. When driving onto bumpy roads, the GO looses contact with the holder, resulting in the GO shutting down;
3. In hot weather conditions, the ball-joint construction is unable to keep the GO into position. The device then 'droops'.

Also a few issues with the suction cup were reported, but those were not structural but rather sporadic problems.

The old and new mount

TomTom
Up to recently, there was not much news to report on a possible 'TomTom solution' to these issues. But last week, a GO x10 owner received a different car mount than the one we had seen up to now. As you can see on the clickable photo's to the left (thanks, Bert Hidding!), TomTom has added a small extra border on top of the holder.

We checked with TomTom, and they confirmed that this was a new and improved model. This is the company's official reaction which they have sent us by email today:

"As a customer oriented organisation, we take feedback from our customers very serious. As a result, some hardware and software changes have been made to optimise the windscreen dock and to make sure the windscreen dock lives up to customers' expectations."

At first sight, the hardware adjustment only seems to solve the first problem we mentioned (the sometimes difficult connection of the GO to the car mount). The extra border 'guides' the unit better to the right spot and greatly facilitates it clicking correctly onto the holder. On the other hand, the influence of the added border to problem number 2 (contact loss between GO and mount) is marginal or non-existing even, and the same is true with regards to problem number 3. (drooping mount)

The software change TomTom mentiones refers to a change in software version 6.11. In the version before, the GO automatically switched itself off when it was connected to the 12 volts power supply of the car, and the car was turned off. When the car was turned on again, the GO also came back to life. Unfortunately, this handy feature was also responsible for the GO's constant switching on and off when riding onto bumpy roads. Very annoying to say the least, and TomTom decided to remove the feature from 6.11 altogether. Of course, it's clear that this is more of a 'patch-job' than the offering of a true structural solution...

Support
In their reaction, TomTom also says that 'old' mounts don't systematically need replacing. "There is no need to replace the existing windscreen dock. However customers who are experiencing difficulties are advised to contact the TomTom Customer Support department, via the support pages of the TomTom website or by telephone. If necessary we will of course replace the mount free of charge."

Up to now, it's still unclear weather or even if TomTom will come up with a solution to the droopy mount problem of the GO 510, 710 and 910. We'll keep inquiring of course.

As it appears to say in the blurb, while this may work to help guiding the unit onto the mount (not a problem I have heard reported that widely) and also it may help with the breaking connection issue (a fairly common problem), they do not appear to have addressed the drooping issue (the most common issue!) - I feel the ball joint is probably too small and doesn't have enough contact area to hold a fairly heavy unit with that amount of leverage. Just my tuppence worth, I guess we shall see...

...now, just got to get me one of those new mounts! smile.gif

Cheers Paul

What about the drooping and lost of suction??? To me those are the biggest of the problems. I can live with having to manually turn of TT by their software "fix."

However it's good to see they are finally doing something, that deserves a pat on the back, but waiting to see if they will address the other problems. In the mean time I gotta get one of them new mounts and check it out.

A colleague tells me that when he tried to buy a 510 recently he was informed at a branch of Maplins that all the stock was being recalled. Given TomTom's record i didn't believe this and their statement confirms this. Anyone else heard anything about unsold stock being recalled.

No, I can't say that I've heard anything about that either, here in the US.

Kudos to TomTom for listening and coming up with a solution. I would expect them to continue to try to solve the problems with the x10 mounts as they move forward.

I've read in a few different places about owners who have had difficulty removing the their x10 from its mount- I would hope that i will help to keep the metal contacts and mount (overall) in better shape, as people won't be tempted to bang their x10 and its mount on the ground to release the two! (HAHA!)

They've got a great product, it would be a shame to see them stop now!

Clearly, TT rushed this product out to market before it was adequately tested, resulting in a loss of reputation for quality and obviously a high cost for redesign and whatever recalls will be required.

Additionally, the question that arises becomes, 'when buying a new 910, how will you know if you are getting the redesigned (but still badly designed) mount or the old mount? If you are buying by mail order, you are stuffed, as you can't open the box to check.

I would say the premature release of these new mounts and the slap dash "quick-fix" solutions amount to a sackable offence.

Time for a head on the chopping block at TT Product Development methinks.

Recall of Tomtom units in Switzerland

Yes, big department store in Switzerland had to send all units back! I hope they are on sell soon again with the new improvments.

Anybody else have some news about the new tomtom products?

When my 910 mount broke (the clear plastic bit bonded to the sucker - a result of twisting it too much to get a good electrical contact) I received a replacement mount from TomTom - one of the new designs. Unfortunately, in terms of electrical contact it doesn't seem to be much better - I really have to ensure the green LED is lit and the unit powered (not easy in bright sunshine), as it has discharged a few times.

When it is working it is a great device, but there are still just too many niggles.

I read on a German forum that the new mount has a gummy substance coating the ball which apparently helps stop the drooping. Has anyone actually tested the new mount for drooping?

when I first bought my 910 I had the same problem with the poor power connection so I took mine back to the dealer and we tried a new tom tom instead of a new mount and that solved the problem. I still have the original mount and the connection is fine so that suggests a problem with the Tomtom and not the mount!

fool.gif Recall; BIG PROBLEM for Tomtom

Its sad that a perfect good product like the Tomtom 910, got in trouble because of a terrible bad designed mont!!! Why did Tomtom not spent longer in testing and bring out a perfect product that makes customer happy ???

Big department stores had to resent all their units! A serious contact problme with the mount and the tomtom unit. Its way out, of my understanding, why Tomtom fixes the major hardware problem with a quick software fix!!

It would be customer oriented to inform their users on the web side! And not hide the huge hardware problme they are facing now!

Whats your opinion, dear tomtom users?

With the advent of v6 firmware im pleased i did not waste money upgrading to the 910. the 910 doesn’t get me to my destination any quicker than my 700 and I believe doesnt provide enough functionality to warrant the extra cash spent. Even without the mount problems and all i don't think the x10's are any better GPS's than the previous equivalents. SiRF III !!! too much emphasis is put on this because in my experience (also using a SiR FIII) the difference is between 5 and 75 seconds acquisition & probably less than 5% signal loss during acquisition. <--- BIG DEAL! Bad atmospheric conditions; Buildings; Solar disturbance unfortunately still apply !!!

Something to consider: -Try looking up the GPS NavStar satellites schedules! Did you know that very occasionally satellites are momentarily taken out of service which does affect GPS globally to a point not mention bad geometry!

What would make me move over? A built-in TMC receiver (saves money, obviously).. better PC software.. something like Garmin’s MapSource would be good and would cater for off and on-road users. A better mount from the outset would have been good!

Ahh now I feel better!

Hello.

Does anyone know where you can buy a 910 that comes with the new style mount?

Or can you only get the mount from Tom Tom?

Thanks.
