Starting today, TomTom has changed a few things about two of their PLUS services. Both the Safety cams and Traffic subscriptions have undergone some changes which are beneficial to the user. There's also a new version of the HOME desktop application available for download: version 1.3.

Safety cams
Up till now, subscribers to TomTom's safety cams paid -on average- an annual fee of 39,95 euro (£27). Per country and per region a separate subscription was required.

Starting today, this very same annual subscription fee gives you safety cam updates for the entire continent of Europe. Within Europe this service is available for the following countries: Belgium, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Spain, The United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland.

These improved conditions are not only valid for new subscribers; existing subscribers also benefit from them. Those who already use TomTom's safety cam information can, starting now, download the new safety cam data for their region and the rest of the European continent. One small disclaimer though: to be able to use the safety cam information of a certain region, you also need to have the map data of said region installed onto your PND. Eg. Safety cam data for France cannot be accessed if you don't have the French map installed.

Traffic
The conditions have also improved for TomTom Traffic users. This PLUS service provides real-time information concerning traffic-jams, traffic incidents and driving conditions via mobile phone downloads to the PND. By use of this information, a more efficient route can be plotted out to your destination. Up till now, users needed to subscribe to TomTom Traffic per country. Same as with the safety cams, this has changed starting today; a Traffic subscription now gives you Traffic in the entire European continent, for a price of 39,95 ¤ per year. In Europe, Traffic is available now for Belgium, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Austria, Spain, The United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland. Also in this case you can only use Traffic in the countries of which the map is installed onto your PND. Another thing to keep in mind is that using Traffic will create additional costs, because of the downloaded data via gprs. These costs are different depending on the tariffs of your mobile phone provider.

Combination
New users of the PLUS services have another additional advantage. Starting today, there's the possibility of having a combined annual subscription for both the safety cams and TomTom traffic for a reduced price of 49,95 ¤ (£ 34).

The mentioned PLUS services are available through the TomTom website and via the TomTom HOME application. That very same HOME application has also been upgraded to version 1.3 by the way. After starting up the desktop application, you will be notified of the existence of the new version, which will then be downloaded and installed onto your computer.

Presumably this 'great news' is the reason that their server has gone down - it could not cope with the excitement!

I have tried for 2 or 3 days to connect & use TomTom plus services & I am now told that the server might be back up tomorrow but, if not, it might be Monday!

Sometimes TomTom less is more!

Hi gadget_sa,

Just seen your post on the PGPS thread. Did you really get all TT's European speed cameras for free?

I just tried, using HOME, but didn't get a thing..... cray.gif

Maybe they fixed it already?

I have installed Home to start toying with it, and I had to uninstall it, as it conflicted with Mozilla Firefox and the all-important Biet-O-Zilla Firefox extension...

Now I am waiting to tell TomTom, but their on-line support service is off-line...
