Ultra-small TomTom PND upcoming?

September 28, 2006 - 16:36 h¦16 replies
It looks like TomTom will 'soon' release an ultra-small PND device to the market. This new unit will feature a 2.8 inch screen.

We haven't yet fully recovered from what seemed to be an endless stream of new product announcements for the end of this year, and already the first rumours of new products for 2007 are starting to emerge. In this specific case we're talking about a new ultra-small TomTom product which should be introduced in March 2007.

Smaller
Info on this new unit is still pretty scarce, but one thing is already clear: where most other manufacturers choose to only release bigger and wider screens, TomTom may very well choose to do the opposite and release a unit with 'only' a 2.8 inch screen. We've based this conclusion on the fact that a Taiwanese parts-production facility has recently received an order from TomTom to produce a batch of these touch screens.

TomTom's choice for a 2.8 inch screen is surprising, since this screen size has hardly ever been used in PND land up to now. The major reason for this is probably because 2.8 inch screens actually cost more to produce that the widely available 3.5 inch screens.

Advantages
There are also advantages to a small screen, of course. The most obvious one is that a smaller screen obviously makes for a smaller, lighter unit. This will be of interest to a new target audience: cyclists (and maybe even pedestrians).

Two PND's which already feature a 2.8 inch screen are Fujitsu-Siemens' Pocket LOOX N100 and Pocket LOOX N110. Both devices measure only 62 mm x 82 mm x 16 mm, and have truly earned the certificate of 'ultra-small'. But we're guessing that TomTom's new unit will be even smaller than that! A weight of less than 100 grams should certainly be achievable.

We have added an artist's impression of the new TomTom MINI (as we'll call it for now) to this article. This clearly shows how the estimated dimensions of the new unit compare to the dimensions of the well-known TomTom GO x10 units.

I was going to mock one up in Photoshop for a laugh, but when I Googled to find a pic of one in a plane to get me started, I found these...

So I don't think it will be very long at all...

Remember the story about the woman who set the cruise control on her Winnebago, then went into the back to make a cup of tea? (and she then sued them successfully because they didn't say it only did speed, not the steering!)

Maybe its not far away...

Head-Up Display and a Forward Looking Infra-Red camera are both options on the new 7 Series BMW range. Looks quite cool but the temptation to drive about with no lights on would be too great....! shok.gif

Wonder why none of the car manufacturers have approached Tom Tom to provide the built-in Nav unit for their cars? The standard ones I have seen (Ford/Vauxhall/Toyota) are awful and have a very inferior interface. Trouble is how do I get my car up the stairs to dock it to my PC so I can do my weekly firmware update!?!?!?!?! lol.gif

Cheers Paul

I think it would be pretty easy to combine this with a light-sensor, which would then make sure then headlights are turned on automatically when darkness falls. Or maybe even better: make it so that the headlights are *always* on, like in the Scandinavian countries. (although I do realise this suggestion probably isn't very popular with motorcyclists, because they would become harder to spot in the midst of busy traffic)

They already have had contracts with Toyota and Nissan if I'm not mistaken. (sure about Toyota, not so sure about Nissan).

They could build in a wifi receiver, so that you could update your car's GO from within your house! blum.gif

Oh Bart trust you to thing practically about these things, I've just been out to PC World and bought a 40m USB lead!!! give_rose.gif

Seriously though, good info, be interesting to see if TT actually makes it in a recognisable form onto any of the mainstream vehicles?

Bart, hi.gif Any more news on these TinyToms? If TT bought the screens in Sept they should be almost cooked by now and ready for serving?
