Finally: new maps for TomTomUnlike last year, TomTom are not offering a special map-upgrade offer for their existing customers. But starting today, brand new maps have become available on TomTom's website. Also new is that these maps can now be downloaded, and until January 1st, TomTom are offering a 20% discount on the downloadable maps.

2006 maps
The new maps originate from Tele Atlas, and are based on their 2006.7 release. TomTom refers to these maps as version number 6.6. TomTom say that 40,000 kilometres of new roads and 18,000 new points of interest have been added to the new European map. A nice touch is that 7,000 new roundabouts have also been added.

Considering the release month of the Tele Atlas material (July 2006), it seems unlikely that there will be significant changes from the maps already supplied with the x10 range or the new edition One models.

New shop
TomTom has also opened a brand-new online shop in order for customers to download this brand new map material, as well as to purchase by the more traditional DVD and SD card method. TomTom CEO Harold Goddijn, says: "With the launch of our brand new online Map Shop, TomTom continues to deliver easy and affordable upgrades to the most recent maps. This ensures the best and safest navigation on the market for TomTom users, regardless of when they may have purchased our products".

In the web shop, you can buy the regional maps, the (old) Australian map, the US and Canadian maps and the Western European maps. Those last two can also be ordered on DVD and SD card. The Western-European map contains twenty-one seamlessly integrated countries: Andorra, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, the UK, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Swiss, Switzerland and Vatican City, all down to street-level detail. The Canary Islands are also shipped as a separate map in the same package.

Installation
The downloadable maps can be installed from the TomTom website or via TomTom HOME. When a user buys a new map which has never before been installed onto his or her PND, TomTom will automatically download extra useful map information after installation of that map. This will include information on maximum speeds and road signs on major roads of certain regions, which is then displayed on-screen when the user drives through that area.

The map material is not just suitable for TomTom's PND portfolio (GO, ONE and RIDER), but also for Navigator 5, Navigator 6 and Mobile 5. Users who buy map material for a PDA which can run Navigator 6 will also receive Navigator 6 itself free with their purchase. Users of PDAs which aren't Navigator 6 compatible will receive identical map material, but without the program upgrade.

All maps can be purchased through the new Map Shop on the TomTom website. The prices for the downloadable versions are:

  • Regional maps with Major Roads of Europe : ¤59.95

  • Maps of Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia : ¤59.95

  • Seamless map of Western Europe (956 MB) : ¤99.95

  • Seamless map of US and Canada (958 MB): ¤99.95

Should you choose not to download the Western Europe or US/Canada map because of size constraints, you can also opt to order the maps on DVD or SD card. But this is more expensive at ¤119.95 and ¤149.95 respectively.

The above prices do not include the discount mentioned. If the discount is subtracted from the price, the newest map of the UK with Major Roads of Europe (193 MB) will cost just ¤47.96.

Update
Now that some of our intrepid members have downloaded these new maps, a couple of issues have arisen.
Firstly, the extra map of the Canary Islands is not presently supplied in the download package for the Go and One models, although it is included on the SD card and DVD versions. Strangely, according to the TomTom website, it is also included on the download version for the Rider. We await further news from TomTom about this.

Secondly, although the map coverage is clearly mentioned on the website, several people have been annoyed to discover that the latest Western Europe map does not include data for the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland or Hungary. Although TomTom are at pains not to say these maps are an "update", many feel that they should at least cover the same territories as their original maps, for example in the Go 700.

Finally, when you visit the web shop, if you select any machine that already has a v6 Western European map installed, (710, 910, One (Europe) or Rider (Europe)) you will not see an entry for the new Europe map, as TomTom believe your existing map is sufficiently up to date.

Also any machines with hard drives (700, 910) will not see the SD card as a purchase option.

So I got a brand new TomTom One Europe v2 less than a week ago, and they have new maps available and I have to pay for them?! Pah, that is very poor service.

"New" maps are old maps. There are no updates available for the newer models like the 910. Surely the ONE v2 has v6** maps?

When you go to the Map Store, on the right side of the screen there is a Product Code checker. It will tell you if you have the most up-to-date maps. If you have that recent of a product, you might already have the newest (or close enough).

I have the 2005 TTG US Map Upgrade, and of course it said mine were outdated. Can't wait to see the new ones! And I'm stoked I can have a seamless US map now with no CD loading. smile.gif

It seems also that you can get free updates if you have a map promotion voucher, or if you bought your GO 300/500/700 after 1st March 2006 and don’t have a Map Voucher you are entitled to request one before the 28th February 2007.

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to cover my Rider, bought in late April 2006 for just over £400 and now available for about £200 cheaper! fool.gif

Can i update my TT700Go Maps from TTHome s/ware ? The "Purchase new maps" option just seems to show the same Western European map info that been there ever since the Home software was first introduced? Or is it? What is it with TomTom? Have they not heard of putting release dates and version numbers here so we at least know we are not dowloading something we already got?!

Not purchasing until i know for sure.

thanks.

Hi there,

I am lucky enough yo have one of the free map upgrade vouchers that TomTom promised to honour when they ran out at the end of September.

I was wondering if anyone had heard anything about when & how I will be able to claim my free upgarde?

Thanks in advance for any help/guidance.

I got a TTGO700 in April 2006 with a map upgrade promotion which TT said they would still honour after the original expiry date of 30/9/06 and, sure enough, I was able to download Western Europe Map 660.1219 earlier tonight using the voucher code. The map file is about 904Mb in size and took about an hour via broadband. The Uk and Netherlands postcode files came with it.

For anyone who hasn't done this, you complete the online purchase in the normal way by going through the checkout process but since it is at zero cost the payment part of the procedure is skipped. You will be informed that the order has been activated. That means that next time you start up TomTom HOME and check for updates the map and poscodes will appear on the download list as three items.

For some reason the first download attempt of the map failed with a read error at about 75% but it worked second time.

Hope this helps others with the download procedure.

Dunno, but have you gone to the new web shop on the TT website? You can download direct from there and then install with Home if you want to.
They also have a version checker where you put in your present map's product code and it tells you if they think it is worth updating.

I tried the product code check, but it just says "No you haven't got the latest map......"

The only map recommended for the 700 is "Western Europe", which now omits Poland and the Czech Republic. There's also no mention of the Republic of Ireland on the list of countries sad.gif But I do get a free Canary island or two... rolleyes.gif

So, if I go by the TomTom site, I need to buy the Western Europe map and Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary & Slovakia to cover what I have. And possibly GB and RoI to cover the British Isles, although I hope that's a cockup on the TT description and RoI is included in the Western Europe map. A total of €128 (or €176 if the TT description is correct and I have to buy GB to get Ireland).

i think you are right sgould, the new western europe download is only 903Mb and my old WE map was 1.3Gb. After I installed my new map on my 700 the old one still remains, so now i have two western europe maps. Do I delete he old one? And where have all my custom POI's and SpeedCams gone?! Am i missing something here TomTom or can u not get anything right?!

Do I delete he old one?

If you want to. You own them both. Lots of people would probably get upset if it DID erase the old one!
QUOTE And where have all my custom POI's and SpeedCams gone?! Am i missing something here TomTom or can u not get anything right?!

I think you are being a bit hard on them here. All POIs (including cameras), favourites etc. are pertinent to a particular map, so they should all still be there with the old map. If YOU want to copy them onto the new map, that's up to you; for POIs it's just a case of copying them into the new map's folder (you WILL need to set up warnings again though). For the favourites, depending on your software version the favourites file may need renaming to match the name of the new map's folder (Pre-v6.5 it is called 'yourmapfoldername'.cfg. Post v6.5 it is called MapSettings.cfg.
