Since September last year, owners of the TomTom GO 510, 710 and 910 have had the option of receiving free traffic information via TMC (Traffic Message Channel). For this, a separate RDS/TMC receiver needed to be purchased and connected to the mount of the GO. For many people this worked well, but some had problems…
Practice
In practice it seemed that in some cases, the traffic info is downloaded very slowly or not at all, which led to a lot of frustration. Fortunately, for the affected users, there's a light at the end of the tunnel. Today, TomTom has acknowledged the problem, and will soon offer every dissatisfied customer the chance to trade his or her faulty TMC antenna in for an improved version.
Official response
This is the official reaction TomTom has sent us:
"The TomTom RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver was designed to provide seamless integration of RDS-TMC traffic information with the user-interface of the TomTom GO, providing customers with the best traffic experience on the market.
Through listening to valuable customer feedback, however, it has come to our attention that in some cases the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver does not live up to our customers' expectations. TomTom has taken feedback very seriously and customers who experience problems will be offered a replacement of their RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver, a new version of which will feature improved performance and which we strive to have available Q2 2007."
Dissatisfied owners of a TomTom RDS/TMC receiver should, at first, report their problem to TomTom's Customer Support. There they will decide whether the receiver is really malfunctioning and needs to be replaced. If this is the case, these customers names will be put onto a list and they will be automatically notified when the new receiver becomes available. TomTom expects the replacement antennas to start shipping in the second quarter of 2007.

I was going to get one of these soon as my traffic is due to expire, i had best wait now for the new units to come out, only trouble is will TT recall the old ones or will they just add the new one
Hope someone that gets a new one will be able to let us know what the difference is so that anyone who buys one will know they are getting a new updated unit

I sent an email to TT support yesterday asking whether a new TMC was going to be released and this was the reply:
"Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support. We are currently reviewing the situation at the moment regarding the RDS-TMC Receiver and will make an announcement at the end of March or middle of April 2007 to that effect."

Perhaps i should have kept the bits after smashing it up with a hammer.
But still sticking to what i've said and never buying tom tom again, (as much as i love my 910)
Still find it amazing that they had the front to market such a pile of c--p.
Are they likely to replace the TMC antenna even if you didn't buy it from Tom Tom?
I bought mine from EasyDevices.co.uk
Never had a traffic update on it yet.

That's good news.
I'm determined to look on the bright side so won't mention all the e-mails I sent to TT about how flakey the TMC antenna is and all the denials I got back!
Now, how (and when) can we get the ball rolling on replacements....?

I sent a question to TomTom support yesterday, but the response I got today was the usual garbage telling my how to plug the TMC receiver in....
Clearly, the official line about replacing the TMC receiver for disatisfied users has not yet reached the caring support department!
Frankly, this whole TMC episode has left me somewhat sick of TomTom - to the point that I'd like to swap the entire setup to a Garmin!
However, I will have one more attempt at getting TomTom support to recognise me as the owner of a poorly functioning TMC receiver - in the hope that I can get a replacement in Q2.
Does anyone have any advice on how to frame the question to TomTom?
