RIDER 2 details leaked in error by TT

March 30, 2007 - 12:01 h¦11 replies
TomTom made a mistake by showing an flash animation of the new RIDER 2 on their website. The official introduction is not planed until April!
RIDER 2 te vroeg op website van TomTomThere will be a new version of the RIDER, TomTom's navigation system for motorcycles. A flash movie of the long-awaited new model, which seems to be called RIDER 2, was on the TomTom website for quite some time this morning. After the American FCC published details earlier this month, now TomTom itself can't keep its secrets...

Still no date has been announced for the official launch of the new RIDER 2, and there have been delays due to design changes along the way. Rumours about a new model have been flying around for over six months. Soon after the introduction of the first RIDER, there were complaints about the quality of the mount. In the meantime the competition has not been standing still. Garmin have brought out several models of the zümo in the last year. So news from TomTom has been expected for some time.

Mount
The flash movie on the TomTom website did give a good impression of the RIDER 2. At first glance not much has changed from the original version. But the holder on the binnacle of the motorcycle has been
completely changed. The RIDER 2 is provided with a headset from Cardo Systems and there will also be an optional mount with built in speaker for use in the car.

Also suprising is that Version 7 of TomTom's navigation software is shown on the screens. At first sight it looks much the same as the current Version 6. See the picture material under this news item for further details.

We have no detailed specifications or recommended retail prices of the new RIDER 2 at the moment. And it's not known when the system will be launched. Unfortunately those details have not been leaked and TomTom, in any case, should still has some tricks up its sleeve...Knipoog.

That is all fine and good about a new Rider, but what about the current Rider and its crap mounting system? When is that gonna be fixed? If they don't fix this $1000 piece of hardware, then they can forget about me as a customer, both in buying hardware and new maps.

Can't come too soon as nobody is selling them anymore, all suppliers are stating that it's been discontinued and they won't take any orders but when I asked TomTom why and got this BS reply.

Sales of our Tomtom Rider have exceeded our expectations and we have sold out faster than expected.
This is resulting in a delay to the planned deliveries and TomTom will communicate new shipment schedules as soon as they are available.

I'd get a Zumo but don't like the slow screen refresh, anybody know of any other bike alternatives worth looking at?

route 3 eh?

does that mean TT will now show the fastest, shortest etc on the same preview map rather than having to ask TT to re-plot it if I wanted to see how the route looks like by the shortest route.

only thing is... isn't it a pain to have a massive earpiece inside your helmet? or will it be say 3mm thick?

Yeah it's about time. I would buy the Zumo instantly for its features; Bluetooth, TMC (!!), fully waterproof, RAD mount and car mount included.

But TT just has the best UI there is.

So hopefully they will do it right this time.

Errrrr........

So, as bike owners it looks like we're still not going to get the widescreen display which is on all the car models?

I use my Rider regularly and have the Scala helmet set up. It works perfectly and once you get it into place the ear piece sits nicely up against your ear. I have an HJC helmet BTW..

I think it's a positive move including the Scala with the kit... I just hope the new mount system is a good one.. I wonder whether the original rider can be modded somehow to use the new mount system..

I've had a few problems with my RIDER but I have to say that when it works it works really well.

I do hope the new mount will fit the existing Rider. I'm already using the Cardo system and it's a nice bit of kit. You can actually hear it at high speeds and as it's fitted to the helmet there are no wiires flapping about.

I was just wondering if any of you that use the Scala headset have an intercom system, as it doesn't seem that there is any way to connect the Scala other than through its own mount which will limit things - I already have speakers built into my helmet so don't want to have a third speaker in there, and the music/intercom volume decreases automatically when the GPS audio cuts in. It would appear that this may not be possible, which would be a severe limitation.

I'm hoping that I'll be able to tap into the audio feed at the mount and link it to my intercom, then I can use the fading etc of that.
