One month after CeBIT, TomTom was drawing attention exclusively to the launch of the RIDER 2 and ONE XL, now they have announced new maps.

New TT maps available for downloadStarting today, TomTom is offering new map data for all their navigational systems. The new maps carry the version number 6.75 with content being based on the Tele Atlas' 2007.1 (January 2007) release.

Last year, TomTom users needed to be very patient until they finally released version 6.6 of the map material, which was back in November 2006. Almost six months later, interested customers can now download more recent maps. Besides the already available maps of Western Europe, several European regions, the United States, Canada and Australia, now maps for South-Africa, Hong Kong and Singapore can be purchased.

Changes
TomTom has released global information on a few specific changes in the new map content. Summing up of all changes would be ineffective, because there are far too many to fit in a news post. Tele Atlas is continuously updating their database from almost 50.000 (!) sources worldwide. Keep in mind that the data of this Tele Atlas release has been updated to around the end of 2006, beginning of 2007, and of course only changes that Tele Atlas were able to map themselves.

Apart from a continuous actualisation of the map data, a few other changes specifically for TomTom have been reported: a change in London's congestion charging zone, addition of the new A26 motorway in Germany, also new Points Of Interest in small French cities and villages, and the improved house number information for Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Price
TomTom has chosen to sell the new 6.75 map data only via their web shop. Hence, the maps cannot be purchased on DVD, CD or SD in the shops. Installation of the map material is very simple through TomTom's website or via TomTom HOME.

Pricing of various regional maps within Western European ranges from ¤ 39.95 to ¤ 59.95, and all region maps include the major roads of Europe. For instance the new map of the UK and Ireland (size: 252 MB) costs ¤ 59.95. The price list of the other maps looks like this (with the size of the maps included between brackets):

  • Western Europe (944,5 MB): ¤ 99.95

  • Poland, Czech republic, Slovakia, Hungary (233,2 MB): ¤ 59.95

  • United States and Canada (1400 MB): ¤ 109.95

  • Australia (Not Tele Atlas, but Sensis maps, version 13; 86 MB): ¤ 199.95

  • South Africa (27,8 MB): ¤ 99.95

  • Singapore (1 MB): ¤ 39.95

  • Hong Kong (1,6 MB): ¤ 39.95

Lastly, there's now also a map of Western and Middle Europe available. This one includes, apart from the standard Western European map, all available data on Czech republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. This is also the only map which includes phonetic information which optimises the pronunciation through the GO 910's text-to-speech. This makes it a hefty download though: 1,7 GB, and it sells for ¤ 109.95.

Navigator
The new map material is not only there for the users of the ONE, GO and RIDER, but also for those who use TomTom's Navigator 6 software. Users of Navigator 5 and Mobile 5 won't be able to use the new maps. For this group, version 6.6 of the maps remains available. When in combination with Navigator 5 a new map of version 6.6 is purchased in TomTom's map shop, Navigator 6 is automatically installed onto the user's PDA. This might render other map material present on the PDA unusable though, so upgrades for those maps will also be required.

The new maps can be purchased through the Map Shop on TomTom's site. Buying a map can be done from there in four easy steps. Users of TomTom HOME only need to select 'Buy Maps' in the application.

Why on earth don't they ditch Teleatlas and use Navteq 100%! The lane in front of my house in Ireland is on the Navteq Map Reporter but doesn't exist on the Teleatlas Map Insight. I'm not paying TomTom big bucks if they're not prepared to give me the detail one would expect. What legally available options are there to buy/install software on a TomTom that comes with Navteq mapping?

phew, 107Euros for US/Canada.

I'll wait for someone to get it first. The last two maps had NO updates for two major Canadian cities - Vancouver and Toronto and in fact, Tim Horton's (our coffee shop) was removed from the POI database!!

Am I misreading this? Should that be six months later? I feel a bit cheated if that is the case because I bought the latest GB map just after the latest update and less than 6 months later there is another "new" map.

Nope... you're not misreading it... (but I do think it's a typo!!)
And I'm with you... feel very mistreated after getting new maps two months ago..

Oh, and there's this bit that really has got me ragged!!

Hellooooo, this is what we GO700 users had before the last upgrade when they took these Countries off us because the money making a**es wanted to penny pinch any way they could.... and now voila, you can buy the all in one again!!!

It also appears they have sparked something with the SDK chaps too.... they know how to kep their Customers happy....NOT!!!!

I will be writing to these morons to show how hacked off I am, and I know I'lll get nowhere with them... but I don't particularly care... I will not be upgrading my maps, and when my unit breaks... I'll go elsewhere....

Time for a beer!

I didn't buy the western Europe map in the aurumn because I was hoping for a "real" 700 map upgrade. And now it seems there is one - and it arrived this year BEFORE I go on holiday!!

It was indeed a typo. Was meant to be 'a half year later', but now I've corrected it to 'six months later' just to remove all confusion. smile.gif

Just checked and I downloaded the 6.6 version last November for GB and Ireland - cost 48 euro

Some 5 months later there is this new version of GB and Ireland on offer and the cost is 60 euro

Also there is the offer of Western Europe at 100 euro which has:

Detailed seamless map fully covering Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, France, Monaco, Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, Spain, Portugal, Andorra, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxemburg, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. Street network coverage: 99%

Now I have a TT500 and IIRC its not possible to navigate across borders without changing maps, unless someone knows better.

If you go for the seamless map (MOWE) then you can quite happily plan trips across Europe without switching Maps, but if you have your UK and Eire map and the MOWE then yes, you'd have to switch maps!

Hi Guys,

In the past I have purchased the new maps as soon as they have become available and I have always been disappointed that the roads around where I live are never updated.

Question Is there a way to check what is covered in the new maps.

Thanks

I understand that Google earth use the same maps so have a look at them for your area. I think you can verify the date the google map was updated. I'll check again when I get time.

You can also use TeleAtlas' MapInsight or Navteq's site to check.

For those in NA, these new 07 maps are the same as the "free" ones. i.e. it's 665.1293.

I'm afraid I wouldn't trust either Google Maps or the TeleAtlas/Navteq sites to tell you what the TomTom maps have on them. TomTom have always been way behind what their suppliers have available.
