Even though the summer holidays have already started in most European countries, the new GO x20 series by TomTom has been unavailable. Up to now that is, because we got word that TomTom has just started shipping the first few batches of these new devices to their distributors. This should be just in time to still benefit from the summer sales.
The company has confirmed the start of shipments to yourNAV.com. This effectively means the first devices will be available in the (online) shops by next Monday or Tuesday.
GO 720T
The first of the new TomTom GO models that will find it's way to the consumer will be the GO 720(T). This top-of-the-range model (for now), will ship containing the maps of Western Europe, and will be available in two versions: the 720T which will include an RDS/TMC receiver for retrieving traffic information will ship for about ¤ 549 / £ 370), and the regular 720 (without a TMC receiver, ¤ 499 / £ 335). Of the other announced models, the GO 520T (with regional map and TMC receiver, ¤ 499 / £ 335), and the GO 520 (with regional map, and without TMC receiver, ¤ 449 / £ 299), it's still unknown if they will ship in the UK.
You also have to be aware that the first few shipments of the GO 720(T) won't be in large amounts, so there will only be a limited supply at the shops. It is very possible that these shipments will only be just enough to cover the pre-orders.
The GO x20 series, which was
announced in Cannes last June, is only 24 millimetres thick, and that makes it the first GO range without a rounded back. These new devices weigh in at 220 grams, and feature a 4.3 inch touch screen, text-to-speech, speech recognition and run version 7 of TomTom's NavCore navigational software.
Map Share
Apart from all sorts of large and smaller novelties in
NavCore 7, we especially look forward to how a very important innovation in the software will work in practice:
TomTom's Map Share. This new technology will enable users to adapt navigational maps if they don't entirely conform with the real-life situation.
Now that the GO x20 has become available, we are sure it won't take long before the first user experiences will start popping up on our forums, and that should give us a good idea if this new technology will live up to what it promises.
Review
Here at yourNAV, we already received a review sample of the GO 720T. We are currently busy with in-depth testing of the device, so you may expect a review of it on this site very soon now…

Great news, was there any indication as to which countries they had sent the shipments to, is the UK one of them?
It'll also be interesting to see if the Traffic versions include the new TMC receivers, hopefully they will, but this will raise concerns with existing customers who are waiting for replacements.
Does this mean that product reviews can now be published, or are TomTom still in control ?

I'd love to see video of the speech recognition in action. I'm also curious if they text to speech has been changed in any way. On my 910, Susan which is the US English female computer voice can't pronounce the word avenue and Dave has issues with numbers from 30-39.

We now have a model 520 and a 720. Are there any rumours about a forthcoming 920?.
It seems logical that one may be on the drawing board.
Ohh goody! Pop's down to local Halfords....

Dixons are now saying next Wednesday (25th) for a "predicted" release date.
Why is there nothing on the TT website about the 520/720? (or is that a silly question?).
Top-end retailers in Portugal (e.g. Fnac) have literally mountains of 910s which they cannot shift. I was perusing the display only the other day at Fnac at Guia when I was pounced upon by a salesman; I explained that I had had my 910 nicked and was awaiting the 720 (he made out that he had never heard of it!!) and he was so keen to make a sale I'm sure I could have pressed for "buy two get one free".

Another thing it could have is full Western and Central European mapping, instead of the (reportedly) cut down Western European Mapping on a SD card.
All on a hard drive of course.

If it will accept the new generation SDHC cards then there is the potential for 32GB capacity.

My understanding (and I could be wrong, since getting definitive information on TT maps is almost impossible until you have actually bought them) is that the 720 will have the "full" Western Europe maps, not the atrocious excuse for maps pushed out at the last update and with the new TT One.
I can see that Western AND Central Europe maps would be an advantage for some (but not for me).

Thanks for that Andy - I couldn't find that this morning.
It doesn't actually say which version (number) of the maps is loaded, only that they are the "most up to date" and "All the newest TeleAtlas maps are installed on the 2GB internal memory as one seamless map, allowing you to find your way to any address in Western Europe.
I am not rushing to buy this until I find out that it has "proper" maps.
Colin
