TT HD traffic now also confirmed for BelgiumAfter its introduction in the Netherlands and announcements in the UK, Germany, France and Switzerland, now its Belgium's turn - TomTom has announced a joint venture with the Belgian mobile phone operator BASE to offer an HD Traffic service in Belgium. It's expected to become operational around mid-2009.

BASE
Mobile phone telco BASE, a daughter company of the Dutch Royal KPN, is the (self-proclaimed) fastest-growing mobile phone operator in Belgium. Recent acquisitions of Tele2 Belgium and Versatel Belgium by KPN allowed BASE the opportunity of greatly expanding its regional distribution.

TomTom's HD Traffic service has been operational in the Netherlands since November of last year. This technology uses anonymous data which is generated by mobile phones and combines this with existing traffic information sources. That way they are capable of determining where slowdowns occur and how long it will take travel from point A to B with greater accuracy.

With HD Traffic, users receive traffic updates every three minutes, which is up to five times faster than with other systems. The system is also not limited to motorways and important primary roads.

TomTom claims the system covers at least ten times as many roads as traditional systems.

Regards
Mike.

Good question!
Best I've found is THIS which is just news of the launch.
Is there anything on the Dutch site that could be translated, Bart?

Not really (yet). There is a nice special about it, but that's to explain how it works, not how well it works.

I have yet a few doubts about how this thing works:
*Does one need to subscribe with this phone company in order to get service or paying once tomtom is enough?
*Does the box include a SIM card otherwise? Can this SIM be used to phoning and gprs, or does it only provide this tomtom service?
*Traffic data is downloaded through this device without any extra mobilephone?

Have you looked at the original newspost about HD traffic HERE

That describes the new HD Traffic receiver.
In brief, the purchase price includes use for six months and there is a monthly subscription.
The unit has its own SIM card included, for that use only.

Thanks, I had read that one but a few things made me think maybe buying the box required you to subscribe with the phone company or something.

Now the tricky question... do these sim cards work roaming or are they country specific?
