Since April this year, NavCore 8 has been available on TomTom SatNavs. This most recent version of the navigational software first came onto the market installed onto the GO x30 series. The following months, the software was also released for other TomTom models via TomTom HOME.
Plans
During a meeting for forum admins, recently held at the TomTom headquarters, the Company let us know that they are not planning on releasing NavCore 8 for older TomTom models, like the GO Classic, GO's x00 and x10 series, older ONE models and the two RIDER models. These devices do not contain the necessary horsepower to be able to provide the NavCore 8 features in an acceptable fashion to the user.
This news means that motorists who are currently still using one of the aforementioned models will probably never see features like Lane Guide Assistance, IQ Routes and recent corrections via Map Share working on the SatNavs. This group of users will also not be able to use the new themes and menu designs with their units.
Mapping Material
TomTom have said that they will release an update to NavCore 7 for these customers, which will enable the use of mapping material of version 8. This means the users will still be able to update their maps to the most recent version, which is essential for a good navigational experience.
Just to be clear, here's a list of all the TomTom models which can make use of NavCore 8:
GO x40, GO x30, GO x20, ONE 3rd edition, ONE XL HD Traffic, ONE XL, ONE 30 series and XL 30 series.

Map Share
TomTom let us know that currently they have not yet distributed all Map Share corrections for all the currently used map versions yet.
The Company is still catching up after the server problems they experienced, and this procedure should be finished by the end of the month. TomTom claims they don't know what number or percentage of corrections have not yet been released to the Map Share community.
About 30% of all the Map Share corrections that were reported so far are already included in the next Tele Atlas map release. This will be Tele Atlas map version 2008.10, which will be released by TomTom (and other SatNav manufacturers) early next year.

You can't change the screen resolution with a software upgrade. It's a hardware feature. So you're either very confused, or you didn't mean to say screen resolution

For example tt700 has a 400MHz cpu (ARM type) with 64 MB ram, the same of tt930, that runs core 8, so, it could only be that there is a marketing reason... if you want core 8 you have to buy newest tt go.

Well i think its the right way for TT to go. I think each model should have a sell by date and they cant keep on updating all the models to allow more functions.

I am prepared to be corrected here but….. the likes of Garmin, Mio etc have never tried to pull a fast one and changed the colour of a sat nav and called it a new version and denied the new versions usage to the older users.
It leaves a bad taste in your mouth that. To me that is on par with Mr Ratnor saying “we sell crap”. TT have consistently and it would seem deliberately tried to upset the loyal followers by dreaming up new money grabbing schemes like this in the last few years. Which is why I suspect he feels that way! I have 4 TTs, now but I don’t think I will get to the 5 stage unless something truly amazing is launched. And I have not seen anything new that appeals to my wallet lately. Just more money grabbing ideas from TT in various guises. I am "off on one" now but I mean for example, taking the itn off the little ones, that was just pathetic but typical TT.

Isn't it legitimate for TomTom that they want to sell new PND's rather than to give away firmware free of charge?
From an ONE Classic user point of view TomTom provided him with
seven (!) generations of navcore. We all knew that they had to do the cut one day, and now the time has come.
It seems the only reason to complain might be TomTom's argumentation. It's a silly one of course but it's not worth a discussion, for the decision is comprehensible anyway.

It might have been more than 7 but 5 of them were full of bugs! But not the point. The classic cant run the firmware even if you wanted to run V8, but the 700 will! But that was not what I was on about.

In one fell swoop TT have just increased the traffic to illegal sites. Navcore 8 works well on the 700, along with the latest maps... I'll use illegal software before I'm forced - blackmailed?? - into buying a new TT just to enhance their profits. This is a rip-off of the first degree, and the excuse "they don't have the power" is patently not true.

I realy don't understand how you can be angry.
Disappointed, yes, but what on Earth makes you think TomTom *have* to provide you with free software updates for ever?
If I want new features on any of my PC programs , I expect to pay through the nose for them.
And as NickG says above, none of the other manufacturers have provided constant free updates like TomTom has up to now.

Ahh but the thing is Andy and this is where (in my case anyway) the disappointment comes in, TT have launched so many models
in such a short space of time that even my relatively new 720 which was launched as a top of the range model pretty recently was within a really short space of time revamped, rebadged renamed and given some better firmware which as of yet I do not have access to unless I buy a new model or get it from the naughty sites which as Entwood is suggesting people will go.
That’s where the disappointment creeps in. No one is suggesting TT should not launch true new products of course you have to or die, but to cut off people that have just given you their cash and so soon after purchase is very annoying. The Cliché of biting the hand that feeds you comes to mind. The 8.2 software is out there, TT have my cash but unless I give them more and I buy the latest unit I can’t use it. I know, it will be launched soon, but I will have a 2nd rate version unlike someone who bought the same thing a little while after me. Boo Hoo.

Having said that TT are not the only company to do this, I am just getting a new C Class Merc, the engines in the basic and Elegance model (diesel) are identical and yet the Elegance has almost twice the Torq which is important to me what with the caravan etc. The difference as far as I can tell is they dumbed down the chip in the basic version to make it less appealing but I have to fork out 2.5K extra for basically a small silicon chip and a bit of tarty trim. What is the world coming to!
