It seems the announcement of the new TomTom ONE IQ Routes is getting a sequel with a variant aimed especially at female motorists. The new TomTom White Pearl will be available within the next fortnight.
According to Corrinne Vigreux, Managing Director of TomTom, it was about time a SatNav especially meant for women was released: Women are an important market segment which has been ignored far too often in the past by manufacturers of consumer electronics. We are starting to realise just how important this group is and for this reason we have developed this special product."
Special
Of course it's good to know just what is so special about the White Pearl. The most remarkable thing about this SatNav is its looks. The exterior of the White Pearl is, as the name already suggests, fitted in a shiny pearly-white colour. The device is decorated with a subtle 'swirl' pattern, which is beautifully expanded on the start up screen.
The White Pearl is sold with a matching luxurious drawstring bag, which can both fit the White Pearl and the EasyPort Mount.
Useful
We also see a lot of differences in the special Points of Interest, which are clearly aimed at women. (because we all know the female motorist's destinations often differ a lot from the ones their male partners use). We've noticed categories like 'Places to be seen', 'Shop 'til you drop' and 'Everyday fashion', and these aren't the only examples. Covering everything from restaurants, bars, cafes, coffee shops, cinemas and theatres to fashion and home furnishing stores – the White Pearl gives drivers the ability to explore new places.
Variant
The White Pearl is based on the recently introduced TomTom ONE IQ Routes. This means that, apart from the 'woman friendly content', the SatNav also features things like MapShare, IQ Routes, a Help Me! safety-feature and the Travel Lane assistant. There's also the 'Where Am I?' function – essential if the car breaks down on a journey, for example. The White Pearl comes with the mapping material of 42 European countries.
The White Pearl will be available from mid-June in some selected shops. The suggested retail price is £179.99.

I don't know about 'in the shops soon'. Don't they mean it'll take you past all the shops on the way?

Tomtom, wake up - this is 2009, not 1809. Or are you going to bring out special models for Manly Men who can't ask directions, with special football stadiums and beer pubs in the database? How about a model for metrosexuals? Or one for ethnic minorities?

I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking this is really naff!
If I was a woman, I'd be quite insulted to think I had to have a "pretty" version specially for lil' ol' me

Don't I remember that last year there was a 'Truckers' version in the states? All heavily armoured rubber protection and all black? That's a real satnav for you - get you out of anything.

They're not even the first to come up with this.
Garmin already did it in 2007, and
Mio even sooner than that, in 2006. Can't remember those models being big successes though...

Well as a woman I have to say I find the Pearl very attracting than the usual boring ugly PND's. If I would go for a ONE I would pick the Pearl because yeah I am a woman and I'd like my PND also to fit with my purse

Ugh what a joke they'll be offering childrens versions soon, so little Johnny can sit in the back and listen to his power rangers Tomtom telling him he's just 3 minutes away from his School gates, whilst he watches Ben 10 on the DVD screen built into the cars headrests..

Where will it all end..

Well technology moves forward. Look at the mobile phones for small children, designed just to call mom or dad. 15 years ago such an idea also sounded a joke
