Today Peter-Frans Pauwels, TomTom's co-founder and CTO, demonstrated TomTom's new navigation software in combination with a specially designed car kit on the iPhone, during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.
The TomTom solution combines two new TomTom products to provide users in-car navigation on their iPhone 3G and new 3Gs:
1. The TomTom navigation application for iPhone; an Apple version of TomTom's turn-by-turn navigation software, including IQ Routes and latest maps from Tele Atlas;
2. The TomTom car kit for iPhone; a specially developed car kit for secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions, hands-free calling and in-car charging.

The TomTom navigation application for iPhone will be available via the Apple iTunes App Store, following the release of Apple's OS 3.0 operating system. Details regarding pricing and availability for both the application and the TomTom car kit for iPhone will be made available in advance of the products' launch later this summer.

Was watching this on the WWDC conference today - looks very slick.
I know ALK Co-Pilot are looking at getting stuff on the iphone too!
I don't think it'll replace the PND's - it'll just be another string to the phone's bow so to speak!

Much as I love my satnav, if I go out for the day I end up with a digital camera around my neck, the tomtom in a shoulder bag, and my mobile in my pocket. I've often wondered about getting all three in one package. The iphone seems to be the best satnav display so far?
I'd like to hear from anyone who starts using one......?

Well the iPhone version of TomTom will only really be usable for guidance when on it's dock. The integrated GPS in the iPhone has such a tiny antenna that it cannot easily get a lock inside a car in a town environment. The iPhone dock pictured, incorporates a separate GPS receiver and antenna as TomTom have obviously realised that their software is pretty worthless without a decent GPS powering it.

Yes, you're right can only speculate from the youtube video on TT's website. This shows just a powered dock. I remember a Gadget show where they tested the two gps enabled mobiles they felt were best specified and both lost signal in London amongst office blocks, though seemed OK in less built-up areas. They did not try them in vehicles though. So probably an external antenna might be needed, but some of us use them already. I was wondering if the phone could handle HDT within its current applications. Then you might end up paying your mobile charges and TT charges. Perhaps I'll buy a bigger shoulder bag - cheaper.

End of the month and still no news on the release date... not even a sniff at the pricing of either the software or the holder!
Navigon is on special offer in the App store right now...
UK is £37.99 instead of £59.99
EU is £54.99 but doesn't say what it will go up too.

Even though I have a TT PND which I am in love with and gets me everywhere since I am very much disorientated lol, I think I would go for the GPS mount solution of TT and TT S/W. As an iphone user why wouldn't I have my personal navigation always carried with me. Also personally i find TT S/W and maps better in quality and usage than Navigon or any other map providers.

It's a bit of a cut-down apparently.
No custom POI loading.
Beware if you want to use it for speed cameras too, the entire "warn when near POI" system has been stripped out!

Have a look on iTunes at the reviews for the application, some of them are nothing short of hilarious well worth a giggle, as for the application, its early days but I am far from impressed, Co-Pilot and Sygic are both better in terms of capability. Even Navigon works better in certain areas, the only application I fail to get on with for some reason is I-Go, no idea why but it simply doesn't do it for me.
I am running a Jailbroken phone so I have the full advantage of the PGPSW Speed Camera Database and spoken alert warnings from the ogg files when running Sygic, this counts for a lot to me and it was worth jailbreaking the phone to achieve this.
Shame really that Apple cannot come up with an interface that offers the ability to add files to specific locations on the phone without Jailbreaking and while I am on the Apple bashing theme I would like them to consider adding the Bluetooth Serial Port Profile to overcome the poor capability of the GPS receiver within the iFone. This would also free up the market place for users to re-employ those old Bluetooth GPS receivers they have sat gathering dust without spending even more hard earned cash, at the same time it could offer a true decent GPS performance from the iFone negating the need to use the sub standard built in chipset - Mike

I have tomtom on my Iphone but would not use it as a dedicated satnav. Ive been with tomtom since day one and think they are the best. Now I do not know if its software or hardware on the Iphone but tomtom drops the signal a lot and has a lot of drag on the map. Also when looking at the map sometimes it has your position as being on the side of the road instead of on it. It works well when it works and maybe with the gps holder it will improve it.
I also have the sygic maps installed but it has none of the faults of tomtom and works well as a gps the only thing is, it has crap voice instuctions. (Sample: Go straight over the roundabout and take the first left.) it drops the signal sometimes but nothing like tomtom. If sygic can get the maps right for the iphone why can't tomtom.

Decided to let my Brother-In-Law be the guinea pig for this one!
Having read the reviews that come on the app each day, I'm more convinced this will be £70.00 wasted.
As soon as he's got it, I'll try and get some screen shots off him, and his feedback.
