TomTom: Winter Discount on mapsWant to buy some new maps for your TomTom device? TomTom now introduces their 'Winter Map Sale', making all this a whole lot cheaper since they now offer up to 40% discount on selected maps for the GO, XXL, XL, START, ONE and RIDER. The maps can be downloaded through the TomTom website.

This offer is valid on selected maps which have been available since November of last year. The new maps carry version number 8.40 and the mapping material is based on the Tele Atlas 2009.9 release of last September.

Download
The new maps are available for download via TomTom's MapShop, which you can find on the TomTom website. It takes only four easy steps to select the right map for your device.

TomTom HOME users need to select the 'Add Map' icon on the main menu.

The Winter map sale has now finished, which unfortunately I missed. I wondered if anyone could guess when the next map sale might be. I have read that often this is when a new map is due for release.

How often do TomTom hold maps sales?.

Anyone got a crystal ball?.

Could a search on Rob Ot and Maps allow you to establish a relationship between sales and introduction of new maps?

What a cynical view:

"The end of a map sale denotes new maps must be available in the next few weeks"

That is much easier than trying to search the site using "Rob Ot AND Maps" my guess is probably around four weeks to go though for the new maps based upon the 3 month cycle - Mike

No its not cynicism; its based on what I have previously read on these forums. I guess I will have to wait patiently and see.

Not good news to those, like me, who have already paid for the four updates, before this discount promotion.

Sucks I think.
Loyalty to existing customers, I think not.

Thanks for this - maybe I should have signed up to the Tomtom emails!

I have a new device, activated 22nd Jan, and was wondering if I'd be lucky enough to use the latest maps guarantee for the February release... it looks like it!

I can put off paying for updates till a later date now, phew!

Hi There,

First post here - so be kind if I ask something I shouldn't!
Just bought TT x940 and very pleased so far.
We're planning a trip to Oz in March and noticed we've just missed TT Winter discount map sale on the TT UK website . We want the Aus maps and have seen them on the TT Au site at a discounted price of 89.95 aus dollars. My fairly obvious question therefore is can I download from the Au site or is there some reason why this wouldn't work - it just seems too easy?
Thanks for any info.

I don't think it will work.

Try it and see. If you go onto the Australian site, you can select the map and get as far as the checkout, but then it asks you to log in.
If you log in with the email address associated with your TomTom hardware you then get this message:

QUOTE Something went wrong:

* No account found with this e-mail address or password

andyxxxxxx@xxxxxxx.com however is registered in the GB site. You can either create a new account in the current site - you have to pick a new username/emailaddress - or go back to homepage, choose the correct site from the dropdown on the right-top, then re-enter the items in your basket. You will then be able to logon and associate the order with your existing account.

But if you do that, you would need to re-register your TomTom under the new email address. You could probably do it, but it causes problems for so many people it's probably not worth the hassle for £13 saving.

Hi Andy,

Thanks v much for the advice. I did try and got the message (as you suggested) .

Considering the fortune it'll cost us in Oz, it does seem stupid to try and save £13 if it will cause difficulties. I don't want any problems when we're there!

Thanks again.

In addition to Andy_P's post you should consider timing.
There is a rumor that the next set of maps should be released on the 14th.
In the past dates have often stretched a bit but you should consider two items.

1.) If you just bought your 940 you will have 30 days from first use to update your device to the newst maps available, using HOME and Latest Map Guarantee (LMG)

2.) Wait with the purchase of your Australian map as long as you can before your trip as the new ones may be out just before you are leaving.

I bought mine almost two years ago before making a trip to the UK.
Before leaving I made a custom POI category and put POIs in there for any conceivable location I intended to visit on the trip. (naming it _Oz [leading underscore] will put it on top of the list of POIs. This made it easy over there to go to the next place by Navigate to..> Point of interest > POI near you > Click on your Custom POI category and select the one you want.
Download and install the programme TYRE. It will attach itself to the Drop down menu of HOME.
Open a POI with TYRE, Edit the address (leave the coordinates alone) and, the the left of the street address type a significant word, by which you will remember it rather than a street name in a strange place.
I usually leave five spaces behind that word to make it stay out.
Sorting order of POIs is not alphabetically but by distance to current location so, as you drive about the order constantly changes.
You can make your own icon, maximal 22 x 22 pixels, and it must have the identical name as the ov2 (POI) and should be saved as a .bmp.

Make your own or use this [attachment=1974:Oz_icon.jpg]
