TomTom Introduces Lifetime Map UpdatesTomTom today at CES announces that it will offer Lifetime Map Updates in North America. This feature allows customers to automatically receive map updates as they become available. It will be incorporated into a range of products in 2010.

Up-to-date
"Roads are continually changing. So it's important for users to always have the most up-to-date maps," said Jocelyn Vigreux, president of TomTom Inc. "With the introduction of Lifetime Map Updates, customers can rest assured that the directions their device provides will always be the most accurate and efficient available."

TomTom Lifetime Map Updates utilize Tele Atlas maps, which are continually updated to include improvements on 6.5 million miles of roads, millions of Points of Interest and map updates and speed profile data generated by the millions of drivers in the TomTom US user community. Tele Atlas' network of global resources - ranging from government documents to satellite and aerial imagery, in conjunction with continuous input from TomTom's user community enable TomTom to deliver high quality maps to its users.

Availability
In order to download TomTom's Lifetime Map Updates, TomTom users need to connect their device to HOME and if map updates are available, they can be downloaded to the device. Registered TomTom users will be notified of new map updates as they become available. Typically, Tele Atlas releases maps on a quarterly basis.

The new Lifetime Map Updates will be bundled with a wide range of TomTom devices starting in early Q2, 2010.

Had to be a catch hey....
Maybe sales of units is drying up in the USA and they think this'll kick start it.
Interesting one to watch to see if it rolls out.

The announcement is rather vague as to what units qualify. Are free updates only available to new units bought after roll-out of the program 2Q10 or available to previous buyers as well? I just bought my Rider 2 last month!

From what I've heard, it is currently only intended for purchasers of certain new models, where a price premium will be added to pay for it.
A decision has not been made whether to extend the system to owners of other devices (but it would be at a price)

So far it is only mooted for the US market and there have been no hints of it ever being made available in the UK, Europe or anywhere else.

Thanks Andy, I suspect you are right. I'd only had my Rider 2 about 10 days when this was announced. TomTom Customer Service responded to my inquiry about it that they do not have "details" on the program and to stayed tuned to the newsletter.

Cheers,

Blue
