TomTom local search available this summerTomTom announces that their local search service TomTom Places will be made available on its portable navigation devices (PNDs), iPhone, and smartphones running on Android.

TomTom Places combines our business listing and enhanced POI database with our map database. By linking business address information with map geocoding information the result is relevant business categorisation. This means people can find what they are looking for in the listings and find these locations in the real world. Examples are hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, cash machines, medical support and auto mechanics.

Lucien Groenhuijzen, Managing Director of TomTom Places says: "Local search is key to providing relevant information about places for people so that they can navigate freely to wherever they want to go. We give people more freedom to discover and enjoy new places along the way, using platforms which encourage a seamless navigation journey from the home via the internet, to in-car devices and on foot using their smartphone."

TomTom Places aims to connect the location of the business with the searcher. Businesses will be able to enhance their own listing information and measure the conversion rate.

Availability
The free add-ons will be available as standard on new connected portable navigation devices and for download onto existing connected portable navigation devices and iPhone's in the summer. The Android application will be made available later in the year. This application will function as a search engine and will display a route description to the destination via the same TomTom map as used by our online route planner (routes.tomtom.com). It will not function as a turn by turn navigation application.

Initial plans cover Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Portugal, followed by a progressive roll out to other countries covered by our LIVE Services.

The website with multi-language search support is available now: www.places.tomtom.com.

This is another classic piece of marketing blurb from TomTom that is all 'puff' and no hard facts.

I already HAVE Google local search on my TomTom PND's (which works well), so is this REPLACING the Google service?

As a quick test I searched for "Fish and Chips" near my home:

Google local serach on my Go940 found 30 results within 4 miles
The TomTom Local Search website found NONE.

I assumed it might not be working at all in the UK, but it did find a single result near a village in Oxford with a similar name to my London district, so it is working.

The blurb also had this info:

QUOTE Initial plans cover Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Portugal, followed by a progressive roll out to other countries covered by our LIVE Services.

So, maybe finding a spot in the UK was a fluke.

No... I just tried a simple search ("cinema" in "London") and it found 128 results.

Google local search found 14,138 results!

So it's working..... just cr*p! (like their POIs)

I just went back and narrowed my search to "cinemas" in my home town of Ealing in West London.

Now a lot of our local "flea-pits" have closed down but Google found the half a dozen or so still remaining in the area with no problem.

.... and what did Tomtom 'Places' find?

ONE entry, and that was for "Music Rhamy's " a Video and DVD rental shop!

Ah, now I realise what this is all about....

If you go to places.tomtom.com and click on "sitemap" you get three headings - products, services and BRANDS.

It's a way of getting some income from the likes of Benetton, BMW and Burberry.
