Nokia have announced that they will be giving away satnav software and maps free of charge to anyone with a Nokia GPS enabled phone!

I have a 5800 phone with Nokia Maps on it. BUT when I run it a warning message says I have 10 driving days to use up within 3 months. Sorry but I don't think they are competing with TT yet. The interface is just too fiddly.

Handset technology and wizzy Software do not a SatNav make. Its all very well to do it just because its technically feasible but my simple view is that they're all on a convergence course fighting for market share and to grab that ever scarcer bit of that pound/dollar whatever from our wallet.
I've got a 5800 as well, and mine is yawningley slow to synch to GPS signals and doesn't want to update its software or install the new Nokia Maps program I tried using, just the "Where am I" map follower a few months ago to find my way. I had to stop every mile or so to let the GPS signal catch up! So sod MrAnssi Vanjoki and his 80m devices worldwide, I'll stay with my reliable TT. --------------------

As an older person with failing eyesight, I need a larger screen than is currently offered by mobile phones. As an older consumer I love my satnav, but only tolerate a mobile. I possess the grey pound!

The software may be free, but aren't there ongoing costs with Mobile Phone satnav's??
I may be wrong, but I thought they had to connect via GPRS to get the route information every time you set upa new route?/ If I am correct, and this is the case, then surely this then does not make it free?? --------------------

As they say the devil is in the detail. If you read their adverts very carefully you will find that they have also been very careful and are almost certainly only referring to free software. However as it gets passed on to the press it gradually gets changed. It's a bit like the old, World War I story. The following message was passed by word of mouth along the very long line of troops - "Send reinforcements we are going to advance". By the time it reached the end of the line it had become "Send three and fourpence (old money) we are going to a dance". Unfortunately with modern journalism these complete distortions take place with a very short chain - perhaps as short as two. |
