Whilst updating my TT 730 the computer crashed and now when I switch on the 730 it only gets as far as the welcome screen.
I have tried a hard reset but with no luck. Is there anything I can do or is it a job for TT? |

This should be easy to fix (hopefully!)
See my two topics in the 'How to... (FAQs)' section.... Tomtom Acting Up? -Part 1 - First Steps In System Recovery and (probably more relevant for this situation): Tomtom Acting Up? - Part 2 - How To reinstall *fresh* Software using Home To keep things tidy, I'll move this to the Go 730 section too.... |

I cannot connect to Home nor as I cannot connect to the computer simply because the 730 will not switch on. Therefore it is not possible to use any form of software to make a repair
I have tried using the reset button several times without success but I only pressed it momentarily. When I get back home on Thursday I will try holding the reset button down for several seconds to see if has any effect. Another odd thing about the current state of the 730 is that once it is switched on it will not switch off - it just gets to the welcome picture and hangs for about 20 seconds and the reboots - thus it is in an indefinite loop. It continues in this fashion until the battery runs out. |

Do you have a back up of the device created by Windows Explorer or TT Home? if so consider copying that to a spare SD card and insert that to the device which will then boot from the card and work quite happily (cheaper than sending it back if its not still covered by warranty) - Mike

Elsewhere was the suggestion that you do a soft reset, then don't turn it on until connected to Home? About my limit technically - sadly.

Therefore it is not possible to use any form of software to make a repair You said it gets as far as the welcome screen, so it does switch on. If you connect to the PC with a USB cable and switch on, do you get the "Do you want to connect to computer?" screen? |

Thanks for all the suggestions, I do appreciate help of any kind. At present I am away from home (my home not TT Home) in a very cold, wet and gloomy Telford but will get home tomorrow.
I will try all yor suggestions then. Thanks |

Hi there
Here is the latest situation. I am now at home and I have tried the following. 1. Pressed reset button for about 45 seconds with the 730 on and with it off. 2. Connected the 730 to the laptop using the TT cradled and then switched on. Under the control of the computer everything worked as expected and all functions operable, such as changing maps, modifying POIs, planning routes, changing voices, updating and backing up/restoring. 3. I then removed the 730 from the cradle and switched it on. The following sequence of events takes place (a) A screen showing TT appears ( © A welcome screen appears (chosen by me). The process hangs at this point for several minutes before going back to (a) and then repeating ( After receiving the 730 I transferred the main map to an 8GB card and I have since added two others. I have very recent backups of the internal memory and of the 8GB card. Can I restore the main memory and, if so, how would I do it? Do I simply overwrite the internal memory using Windows 7 (not TT Home) or is this inadvisable? I do seem to be asking rather a lot here but I have great faith in the many experienced members of this forum. Is the fault likely to be hardware rather than software? |

That's great news....
If you can see the contents of the internal memory and SD card using Windows Explorer, you should be able to fix it using the second link in my first reply - Tomtom Acting Up? - Part 2 - How To reinstall *fresh* Software using Home. Basically it involves deleting all the files on the SD card that are NOT inside a folder (do not delete any folders) using Windows Explorer, then running Home, and it should reinstall the software. Leave the SD card alone if it only contains maps in folders, but do check it, as you (or Home) may have somehow installed another copy of the operating software on it by mistake. If it has any loose files (i.e. not in folders on the SD card, let us know what they are. |

It sounds like Oldun is removing the 730 from the cradle at disconnection without waiting for the TT to reload and offer the 'Do you wish to connect to the computer Yes/No' screen....would this have an effect?

Certainly could do....
Are you using the "safely remove hardware" routine every time you disconnect, Oldun? |

It sounds like Oldun is removing the 730 from the cradle at disconnection without waiting for the TT to reload and offer the 'Do you wish to connect to the computer Yes/No' screen....would this have an effect? Yes, I have been guilty of that in the past but now I do it properly. I have now gone through the TT process for removing the software from the 730 and the computer, resetting, reformatting, reloading and then updating. I have gone through this process three times and I have tried the advice given here and on the odd occasion it did work the first time but always hangs up again at then second start. I have now asked TT to take it back for repair. Thanks for all the advice. |
